June 2002                                                              Print Legacy Newsletter

Since we are continually meeting new friends through this publication, I decided over the next couple of months to introduce you to our group and tell you a little something about the individuals within Legacy.  This month I will focus on Legacy’s band.

Leading our band is Durwood Hargis from Clayton, NC.  He writes many of the songs Legacy sings and has a wonderful testimony to share.  His love for the Lord is evident in all of the songs he writes, with a foundation for many of the songs being God’s amazing grace, love and forgiveness.  On a personal note, Durwood has been playing and singing gospel music for 25 years and has graced the stage with several groups, including “Damascus Way”, “Heartsong” and “Southern Cross”.  Durwood’s favorite Bible verses are John 3:16 and Romans 8:1.  Durwood states his favorite singers are Kenny Hinson and Rusty Goodman.  Favorite songs of Durwood are a couple of powerful songs that he wrote, “He Carries Me” and “The Ocean Refuses No River”

Keeping all of Legacy at the right tempo is our drummer, Brad Lee from Zebulon, NC.  A “complimentary” drummer is hard to find, and Brad helps to keep everyone sounding their best.  Brad also has the unique privilege of saying that he “stole” Durwood’s daughter.  Yes, Brad is Durwood’s son-in-law.  Brad has been in gospel music for 3 ½ years, and prior to joining Legacy, played with a group called “Riders of the Carolina Sage”.  Brad’s favorite singer is Mac Powell of “Third Day” and his favorite Bible verses are John 3:16 and John 15:5.  Brad chooses as his favorite song, “Forgiven”, written by Durwood.

Finally, we have our very own “mouth of the south”, Andy Mitchell from Pikeville, NC as our bass guitar player.  Andy has been singing and playing gospel music for 20 years, and has formally sung with “Canaanland”.  Andy’s favorite bible verse is John 3:16 and his favorite song is “What A Day”.  We joke about Andy’s love of people and of talking, but seriously, Andy has a tremendous amount to talk about.  In 2000, Andy was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of cancer, which the best doctors at both Pitt Memorial and John’s Hopkins Hospital in Maryland all said was no hope for a cure.  At the lowest point, Andy was basically sent home to die with only 6 mos. to a year to live.  Literally thousands of people in dozens of churches lifted Andy up in prayer for healing during this trial.  It was a few months after Andy’s diagnosis that Andy made a return trip to John’s Hopkins for several tests to be run over a period of several days.  At the end of these tests, the doctor’s came into Andy’s hospital room and told Andy that they didn’t know what happened, but they couldn’t find any cancer…anywhere.  Andy told the doctors to have a seat on the edge of his bed and he would tell them exactly what had happened.  GOD is what happened and God worked an absolute miracle in Andy’s life.  Andy is still completely free of cancer today and God has used that trial to open several doors for Andy to be a witness of God’s amazing grace, mercy and Love.

Well, that’s our band and we hope you can come out to meet us next time we are in your area.  Next month I’ll tell you a little about the three “heroes of the faith”, our vocalists, which I am privileged to sing with each weekend.

In Christian Love,

Tim Perry for Legacy
